Optics Kit

Redesigned for Simplicity, Savings, and Classroom Efficiency

Challenge

An educational OEM approached Steiner Enterprises to modernize an outdated optics kit used in classroom science labs. The legacy kit relied on cast and sheet metal components that were both expensive and awkward to use. The customer needed a solution that would be more affordable, easier to operate, and still compatible with their existing optical track system.

Solution

Steiner Enterprises reimagined the kit using injection-molded plastic, which allowed for lighter components, snap-fit features, and fewer mechanical fasteners. These design improvements enhanced usability for students and teachers while simultaneously reducing manufacturing and assembly costs. The redesigned components also maintained full mechanical compatibility with the customer’s existing mounting rail system.

Design & Engineering Highlights

Swapped costly metal components for plastic injection-molded parts

Eliminated most thumb screws and fasteners

Maintained full functionality with legacy optical tracks

Reduced parts count and improved classroom durability

  • Mechanical redesign for manufacturability
  • Decal and label development
  • Retail-ready packaging
  • Cost optimization for educational market constraints

Assembled in the USA using international components

Outcome

The updated optics kit retained all critical teaching functionality while significantly improving ease of use, assembly speed, and cost-effectiveness. Instructors benefited from simplified setup, and the OEM realized substantial savings in production and logistics.
